Weekly Reflection 1

This week we discussed FIPPA, privacy and consent when posting on our personal blogs and how these might factor into our teaching utilizing multimedia in the future. These topics were something I had not considered fully when thinking about being a teacher. For example, I had not thought about who would own a photo a teacher posted of their students doing activities in class. I had coworkers when I worked as a teacher in Korea who would post pictures of the children doing school work frequently and, while I had initially thought of this as a grey area, I now understand how this is lacking informed consent. Since students are minors, it seems obvious now to have to have their consent, as well as their parents’, before posting online. This will be something I take into consideration moving forward in my career teaching.

Another interesting point learned in this class was that photos of students on our own personal social media pages might be considered as “in the custody or under the control of the school.” The ownership of content online is something I had never understood fully and these guidelines do well to highlight the dos and don’ts of teacher and student content online. However, having to research FIPPA guidelines and practically implement them could present as a challenge to teachers who might not be as tech savvy or have to pivot on their lesson planning to accommodate every individual.

Furthermore, I found it useful to learn about creating a “notice of purpose” for students and parents before using personal information online. It makes sense to have every party aware of what will be happening with their information and where it will be going. Students and parents need to be educated on privacy online and how use privacy laws to better serve them in their learning journey. Learning about FIPPA and its implications has prepped me better for the education field and will allow me to plan accordingly in a safe manner moving forward with my students in the future. EdTech Inquiry

Our group tackled the topic of cyber bullying. Our main inquiry questions were focused on the following:

What is it?

Where is it?

How can we prevent or mitigate it?

The topic of cyberbullying, and bullying in general is very relevant to teaching and learning as it directly impacts students’ well-being. Access to the internet is inevitable and platforms for social engagement where cyberbullying can thrive. It is everywhere at all times, making it difficult to control and monitor. As teachers, it is our responsibility and moral obligation to care for our students and their well-being, so intervening, raising awareness and providing support is crucial. Addressing this issue in education is essential to fostering a safe and supportive environment for students.

With cyberbullying comes many negative things. For instance, cyberbullying can lead to emotional distress, decreased self-esteem, poor mental health, higher absenteeism, and a variety of negative physical effects caused by stress in students. Ignoring or inadequately addressing cyberbullying can lead to a toxic learning space where students could have their academics and social interactions negatively impacted.

Tackling cyberbullying is an insurmountable task, but it must be done. Some ways in which cyberbullying can be mitigated are through raising awareness, such as with initiatives like Common Sense Education. In this, teacher can access pre-made lessons for all grade levels on how to tackle cyber bullying. Teacher can also encourage their schools to get involved in initiating anti-bullying campaigns and invite guest speakers to speak on the topic and reach a mass audience. Furthermore, teachers can help direct their students to counseling services. School counseling resources are an obvious first chpoice as the teacher has access to school faculty who can help students through tough times associated with cyberbullying. They can also direct students to online counseling platforms like Better Help and their sister site Teen Counseling, communicating with the students and their parents to find a solution to the bullying.

My contribution in this project was to focus on cyberbullying prevention strategies. In this, I researched ways that we, as future teachers, can contribute to the solving this problem by consulting with Google. I found websites that offered solutions, links and suggestions to cyberbullying prevention and mitigation. I then took the best and most realistic answers and included them in the presentations slides with resource links to some of the suggestions. I was responsible for not only the research, but the slide design and oral presentation portion of this component. Overall, I learned a lot of great resources to utilize if this problem occurs in my career. In particular, the Common Sense Education resources I found to be the most impactful as it provides pre-made lessons I can access at any given time to address this topic with my students and help raise awareness. While this assignment provided me with some new knowledge, I didn’t particularly want to do this topic for our project. Other teams chose technology tools to discuss and I feel like that might have been a better option to go with for the sake of my own interests. However, it was great to learn about this topic nonetheless.

Free Inquiry Introduction

Hi!

Welcome to The Blog. I hope to use this space to share some of my tips, tricks, stories, resources and experiences with travelling the world.

Throughout the last decade, I have found my way to six continents and forty countries, some popular destinations, and some off the beaten path. Every time I plan another trip, I have steps I follow to find out more about my destination and the logistics of travelling there. While this platform is great for sharing travel knowledge I have acquired through experience, I would also like to share my process for researching and planning travel to new destinations. Not every trip is the same, with some requiring a significant amount of preparation.

Through the Free Inquiry Project, I hope to present the concept of travel, whether it be to touristy destinations, or to the more weird and wonderful parts of the world, as something achievable. I want to share my process for planning a trip and learn more about new destinations in the process, like how to get myself around and what there is to see and do in new countries. For the purpose of this assignment, I will be diving into one country that’s been on my mind for awhile: Uzbekistan! To start, I have included a link here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcqAu8VyjZA&t=241s to a documentary on the country. I find documentaries give a solid overview of a new destination with visual representations of what one might expect of the landscape, people and history.

Travel can be daunting, but with the right tools and mind set, it can become more feasible and exciting! I hope this blog interests you in travelling to places you never considered before and gives you the toolkit to effectively plan a trip of a lifetime.

Stay tuned for more to come!
